The Biblical Beard
Stay at Jericho until your beards grow
Jonathan Vandor

Did you know that hair is intrinsic to mammals and is the fastest growing tissue of the human body? Did you know that it can grow 0.4mm per day and do so for up to 7 years before falling out? That means that a human hair can grow up to 100cm long! The average minimum life span of a hair is 2-3 years resulting in a maximum hair length of 30-40cm. Its just the way God created us. Moreover, He created men hairier than women. In fact, we men grow a great amount of hair from our face!

IT IS CALLED A BEARD!!!!!

Did you know that God commands men to let their beards grow naturally? Leviticus 19:27 says,
"You shall not round off the side-growth of your heads nor harm the edges of your beard" As a result, the unfashioned beard was associated with the identity of the men within the people of Yahweh.

Jesus, who fulfilled the entire divine Law, had a beard. Isaiah 50:6 says,
"I gave My back to those who strike Me, and My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting." Jesus' beard identified Him as a descendant of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, it represented a Law, a people and a God that they despised. The Romans were generally "clean shaven" which is an interesting term that implies that beards are somehow dirty.

In similar fashion, we see in 2 Samuel 10:4-5 that Hanun shamed David's men by shaving half their beards,
"Hanun took David's servants and shaved off half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle as far as their hips, and sent them away." When news of this reached David "he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly humiliated. And the king said, "Stay at Jericho until your beards grow, and then return.""

To the unsaved, the instruction of God serves to reveal sin in its true light and thus the need for a Saviour. To the saved, the instruction of God serves to increasingly separate us from the world and conform us to God's Word. It is a great shame that the vast majority of men who profess the Word of God wake up every morning, stand in front of the mirror and carefully eradicate their God given facial growth in order to conform to the world. As a Christian friend flippantly said to me recently, "I grew a beard once, but I looked Jewish, so I shaved it off"

Yet Moses,
"refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt" (Hebrews 11:24-26)

Jonathan Vandor
I grew up in churchianity and lived like the world up until the day I heard a preacher say, "...listen to the voice of the Lord and
do what He says!" It was then that the Light went on in my head and in my heart and I realized that the Bible was a book of instruction for today, that God's law still applies and that I had broken it. That was 4 years ago and YHWH continues to separate me and my family from the unscriptural traditions of men, sanctifying us by His Truth, His Word, His Commandments. We live in the beautiful country town of Cootamundra, NSW, Australia where we homeschool our three children and seek to proclaim His gospel in spirit and truth. I host a weekly gospel radio program, TRUTH2U, and keep a blog at col2v8.blogspot.com - Jono Vandor
